Braille Authority of the United Kingdom
Welcome to the web site of the Braille Authority of the United Kingdom.
What's New
- BAUK is conducting a public consultation on UEB (Unified English Braille), and has issued a booklet including an introduction to UEB, some UEB samples, and a questionnaire which all braille users in the UK are invited to participate in. For more information go to the UEB Consultation section on the Current Projects page, where there are also links to allow you to download the UEB booklet and questionnaire in various formats. Note that the closing date for receipt of completed questionnaires is Tuesday, 30th September, 2008. The Current Projects page also contains further information about the UEB project generally.
- At its meeting on 3 July 2008, BAUK agreed to a merger with two other organisations, COTIS (Confederarion of Transcribed Information Services) and UKABP (United Kingdom Association of Braille Producers), scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2009. A new organisation will then come into being called UKAAF (United Kingdom Association for Accessible Formats). More details about this will be posted later, but the discussions leading up to this decision can be read in recent minutes of BAUK meetings.
- A new 2008 edition of Braille Science Notation is now available in print from the publications page. This edition contains amendments needed to preserve conformity with the 2005 edition of Braille Mathematics Notation (also available from that page).
- The resolutions made at the ICEB General Assembly held in April 2008 are available on the Current Projects page (under ICEB Assembly 2008).
- An article promoting the value of braille. You are welcome to use this as a handout at events, etc, to help encourage braille awareness and use. A version in MS Word format is also available from the BAUK Papers page.
